Five Indie Flicks you May Have Missed

When most people think about Indie Films, they think about a black and white, foreign language film about a talking goat or something obscure like that. But the truth is that many great films you’ve seen are from independent cinema, you just didn’t pay much attention because it wasn’t summer blockbuster. Here’s a list of well received Indie Films you should watch.

 #5 Still Alice

Bet you didn’t see this one coming. This independent gem got all kinds of Oscar buzz, even getting a win for Julianne Moore for best actress. And it’s not hard to see why. The film tells the story of how a linguistics professor gets diagnosed, and then copes with Alzheimer’s disease. Its important to mention that there is a star-studded cast, including Alec Baldwin and Kristen Stewart.

#4 Slow West

This movie stars X-men star Michael Fassbender, among other stars, and centers around what can only be described as a modern western. With all the elements you would expect, a man traveling cross country to find the woman he loves, and an outlaw that helps him along the way, you really can’t go wrong with this one.

#3 Cake

Cake is a more thoughtful film about a depressed Jennifer Aniston who abuses drugs, and takes you on an emotional journey into her life. The role got the Friends actress a Golden Globe nomination for her performance, as it represents a deep departure from her regular comedy roles.

#2 Knight of Cups

This film is about a man who struggles to find his way amidst fame and fortune and everything in between, as a screenwriter in Los Angeles tries to make sense of his life. Although he is succesful at work, his personal life feels like it has no meaning. You probably know the protagonist, Mr. Batman himself Christian Bale plays Rick, a man who is quite the opposite of what were used to seeing from him. Plus, you might have heard of some of the supporting actors in the movie, like Oscar winner Natalie Portman, Cate Blanchett and Antonio Banderas

#1 Maggie

The final independent movie in our list has something in common with one of the biggest blockbusters of the summer, as it stars ex governor, former bodybuilder and Terminator Genisys star, Arnold Schwarzenegger. But apart from Arnie in the starring role, there’s plenty to like, firstly, this is a zombie movie, but not the kind you would expect. This is a rich story about a father and his child, a child who by the way is slowly becoming a cannibalistic zombie. So it’s more of a drama that exposes the acting skills of America’s most loved action heroes.

The are five fantastic stories that have come out in the past year and you should really give them a chance, because these are some great experiences that you won’t find anywhere else. And some of your favorite Hollywood actors have made a genuine effort to do something different and unique.

Why You Should Care about Independent Cinema

When you think about movies, one of the first things that comes to mind might Terminator Genisys or Jurassic World. But if you want to challenge your mind while having fun, there’s nothing like sitting down and watching a good indie flick, if for no other reason than to get a good, original story.

A clear view into a director’s vision

Woody Allen - Christian Lovera

Woody Allen

You see, independent cinema is more character driven and the director has almost total control over his vision, and their names are very recognizable. For example, you might have heard of Woody Allen, who has made incredible films with his most recent muse, Scarlet Johansson, who has done practically everything from Ghost World to Marvel’s Avengers movies.

And that is what really defines Indie films, most directors have a signature shot, style o trademark that can be seen in almost all of their work. For example, director Wes Anderson, creator of The Grand Budapest Hotel always uses symmetry in his films. And almost every director inserts their own signature to their movies.

It can define an entire genre

Alfred Hitchcock, basically, defined the modern horror genre, with masterpieces like Psycho, The Birds and Dial M for Murder. As a matter of fact, he inspired a new generation of thought creating suspense that has inspired a whole generation of filmmakers.

This years It Follows was a surprise horror hit because it shows little to no violence, blood or nudity. Also, it had a surprisingly low budget and still manages to give you goosebumps, why? Good story telling for sure, and directed in a way very reminiscent of Hitchcock’s work.

You get really interesting stories

Ryan Gosling - Christian Lovera

Ryan Gosling

Ryan Gosling is best known for being a Hollywood heartthrob, but did you know he directed Lost River? That’s right, directed, and pretty well, he gives a truly unique story about life in Detroit from the point of view of one of the last families living in an abandoned neighborhood, while also giving all sorts of shocking and artistic images throughout the film.

Many famous actors try independent films at least a couple of times. In fact, some directors as well as A list stars like Jennifer Aniston started their careers in indie films.

And finally, the best reason to start paying attention to independent cinema is that you get to enjoy an original story, that means no remakes or sequels that rehash the same thing over and over again. Plus, supporting your favorite actors and directors will get them to make even more awesome movies.

The Force Is Awakening

Star Wars - Christian Lovera

Star Wars

Almost thirty years ago the world saw the birth of one of the most beloved franchises in history. In 1977 the first Star Wars movie was released to critical acclaim. Everyone was marveled by what they were witnessing, the technology used in those times were light years ahead of anything done back then, and the fans could not get enough of it. Right after that movie came out everybody became a fan of the Jedi Order, and having a lightsaber was the dream of many. The Star Wars franchise became an inspiration for many other movies and managed to shape pop culture in its time. The initial Star Wars was followed by two sequels who were also well received by critics and fans alike and brought the story of the jedi Luke Skywalker and the rebels to a close.

Almost two decades later  Star Wars came back with a prequel trilogy. Luke Skywalker’s story was already told and had a satisfying end, but there was still more lore out there. The story of the main antagonist of the first trilogy needed to be told. The new trilogy told the story of the young Anakin Skywalker, destined to become the feared sith-lord, Darth Vader. We also saw the rise of Obi-Wan Kenobi, Luke’s first master, from a promising young padawan to a full fledged jedi master. We saw how Anakin grew from a kind hearted young man to a ruthless sith.It showed us that even the most pure can fall into darkness. Anakin gave into the darkness thinking it would save the life of her love, but it was all a ruse from the Emperor, the sith mastermind before all the events. Darth Vader was born at the end of the movie, ready to do the Emperor’s bidding and escape the pain from the death of his wife, not knowing until much later that she gave birth to his daugther Leia, and son Luke. This trilogy was received with mixed reactions, but still became a success.

Star Wars

Almost ten years after the prequel trilogy everybody thought that there would be no more Star Wars, but that changed in 2012 after Disney bought Lucasfilm. Disney announced the beginning of a new trilogy, set 30 years after the end of The Return of the Jedi, which will bring back familiar faces, such as Luke Skywalker and Hans Solo. The film will be directed by J.J. Abrahams, who is best known for his work with sci-fi. This will be the first Star Wars made after George Luca’s retirement, but still has him as a consultant to make sure that the film is the best it can be.

At the moment there hasn’t been too much plot details, just confirmations that we will see familiar faces, etc. Many fans are excited about the return of one of their most beloved franchises, while other are most skeptical about it, mainly because they didn’t fancy the prequel trilogy. You can expect more details to arise in the following months, but without giving too much spoilers. Thank God we still have some stills and trailers to keep us busy until  Star Wars: The Force Awakens release on December, 2015.

Frieza is Back!

Dragon Ball - Christian Lovera

Dragon Ball

No one can ignore how influential anime has become. Every person in the planet surely knows about it and even can name his or her top 5 animes. Some favor classics like Saint Seiya or Evangelion and even maybe Pokemon, but there is one thing for sure in each of those list. Any anime fan will surely rank Dragon Ball as one of its favourite animes of all time, and how could they not? Every 90’s kid was sure to be a huge Dragon Ball fan. We all remember how excited we were when we got home from school and tune in the new Dragon Ball episode on Cartoon Network, or any other channel, and just sit there amazed by the skills of Goku and company. And now, as adults, just as we were ready to grow up and leave Dragon Ball in the past we find out that a new movie about Frieza, fan favourite villain, is coming to America. Forget about growing up! Time to go super saiyan about these news!

In 2013 we were greeted with a Dragon Ball Z movie called “Battle of the Gods“, which was the first movie to be supervised by Akira Toriyama, the creator of the Dragon Ball universe. The movie was a success as fans all over the world rejoiced about having new adventures from their favourite warriors. Two years later no one could predict that fans would be greeted with yet another Dragon Ball movie, supervised yet again by Akira Toriyama. We feel so spoiled, but so good.

Dragon Ball

Dragon Ball

The events of the movie happen some time after the previous Battle of the Gods movie (both movies are canon in the Z storyline by the way) and everyone lives in peace, but of course, peace is something very shortlived. Just when the warriors thought that earth and the universe were safe from any villain set on destruction Frieza comes back for revenge and stronger than ever.

To try and not give away much of the plot, so you can enjoy it to the fullest, we will just say that Frieza has a bone to pick with the Z warriors, especially our boy Goku, and also take over Earth, because why not.

There is some plot details we can share because we are sure they are already public domain. We have all seen the latest Frieza transformation, like he wasn’t a dangerous threat before, this time he transforms into Golden Frieza, much like a super saiyan, and you can bet his power will be even greater than before.

Dragon Ball

Dragon Ball

Frieza became so powerful than Goku’s current strenght may not be enough. Time to ascend to yet another super saiyan form. Last movie we were greated to super saiyan god, another level of power which turned out to be amazing, but now Goku seems to have achieved super saiyan god 2. Will it be enough?

We can hardly wait to see our childhood heroes back to save the universe from the villanous Frieza. Nothing a Kame Hame Ha can’t fix.

Earth’s Mightiest Heroes Are Nearly Upon Us

Earth’s mightiest warriors are back in less than a week and we are all freaking out about it. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been of the biggest movie franchises in recent years, or decades, I think there has never been anything quite like it. A series of Marvel super heroe movies being released almost yearly and to critical acclaim is almost, if not, genius. Seems hard to believe that it all began with the Iron Man movie, starring Robert Downey Jr, a movie that did better than anyone thought possible and made the MCU a reality. The MCU began in 2008, with Iron Man, and here we are, 2015, tons of Marvel movies after and the MCU shows no sings of stopping.

The Avengers - Christian Lovera

The Avengers

Upon us the second biggest MCU release after the first Avengers movie, which is of course Avengers 2: Age of Ultron. Our favourite heroes unite once again to battle the newest threat to the world, Ultron. Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk, Black Widow, Hawkeye, and newcomers Scarlett Witch and Quicksilver must work together in order to stop Ultron, a mistake made by Tony Stark. A failed experiment by Stark comes back to haunt him and he will need the aid of the Avengers.

The Avengers: Age of Ultron - Christian Lovera

The Avengers: Age of Ultron

Just when the team thought their adventures ended when they ended the evil plan of Thor’s brother, Loki, they are summoned once again to stop the aritificial intelligence Ultron. Ultron, played by James Spader, renowned actor currently the leading man in the NBC show The Blacklist, does an amazing job in bringing life into the character. James Spader may only provide his voice and facial expressions to the newest threat to the world, but he does an amazing job to it, no one else could deliver Ultron’s lines with such mallicious intent without coming out as cheap or tacky,

Ultron - Christian Lovera

Ultron

Avengers: Age of Ultron will be the movie that ends the second chapter in the MCU and will probably have some dire consequences that most likely fuel the fire for the upcoming movie Captain America: Civil War, which we all know is one of the greatest story lines in Marvel History.

Chapter three in the MCU will begin with the movie Ant Man, starring Paul Rudd, which also looks amazing and a strong start to a new franchise on a super heroe.

The Avengers - Christian Lovera

The Avengers

Let’s not forget that the MCU does not only consist of movies. While waiting for Avengers: Age of Ultron, you can ease your Marvel cravings by watching the newest Netflix Marvel show based on everyone’s favourite blind lawyer vigilante, Daredevil.

The number of super heroes are just getting bigger and bigger, and with the newest additions from Avengers 2, Quicksilver, The Scarlett With and the mysterious Vision, we can expect the upcoming Captain America to be just as awesome as Avengers 2, or even greater.

Once thing is for sure, on May the first, when Avengers 2 hits theathers you will fine no one on the streets during the premiere because everyone will be cramped inside a movie theather giggling like a school girl while watching their favourite heroes kicking some evil butts.

Can Shrek Survive His Wife’s Family?

When talking about animated movies severeal pieces of art come to mind. We have movies like Finding Nemo, which was very well received by the audience and has a sequel in works, and we have the most recent animated blockbuster Frozen, which did very well beyond anyone’s expectations. All of these animated movies are truly great, no questioning that, but there is one franchise that stand above alkl the other ones, Shrek. Shrek 2 keeps all the elements from the first one and brought a whole lot more in order to make a movie that truly does the first one justice and stands as one of the best sequels in the film industry. Let’s check it out.

Shrek 2 - Christian Lovera

Shrek 2

Shrek managed to get the girl and the end of the first movie and thought that all his woes were over. He had married the girl of his dreams,Princess Fiona, and went on a lovely honeymoon to celebrate their love, everything was good and well until they decided to go back to their swamp and begin their new life together. Turns out Fiona’s parents heard the news of her marriage and wish to have the newlyweds over to meet their son in law, quite the surprise they will get.

Shrek agrees to meet Fiona’s parent but knows it will end in disaster once they see they are both ogres. The parents are of course shocked to see their daughter is still an ogre after breaking the curse but decided to make the best of the situation, that is until tensions rise between Fiona’s dad and Shrek. Shrek decides he has had enough and wants to leave but Fiona wants to stay and reminds him on all she sacrificed in order to be with him, which would be taking the shape of an ogre.

Shrek then tries to find a way to make it up to Fiona by looking for a potion for them to be human, so they will be able to live a normal life with her parents. The potion, however, was all part of a trap setup by the Fairy Godmother in order to make human Fiona fall in love with her son,Charming, so that he would be king someday. Learning of this Shrek rushes back to Fiona, who is surprised to be human again.

Charming claims to be the human Shrek in order to trick Fiona into drinking a love potion to make her fall in love with him. Shrek arrives just in time to stop the farse and a battle ensues between Shrek and friends against Charming and his mother. Shrek wins and gives Fiona a choice, if they drink a potion that Shrek bought they can live forever as humans. Fiona choose to remain an ogre because their love goes beyond their physical appearance.

Once again the Shrek movies teaches us that love comes in many shapes and sizes. Unconventional love stories will always be the ones that resonate the most with audiences, that is the true charm that makes people continue to watch these movies to this day.

A Different Kind of Love Story

Movies about love stories have been stuck in a rut since they ever started appearing in cinemas. We always have the sames story about a couple going through the same obstacles in their love and then overcoming them in the end and end happily ever after. We might still find it cute, but we can all agree that it is getting more and more tiring. However, Animated movies bring a whole new life to this familiar setting. Movies like Tangled show a new side of the whole love story affair while still tackling a whole other kind of issues, and that is just the first out of the many animated movies that I can think of that can be considered love stories. Today, however, we talk about the mother of all animated love story movies. Welcome to Shrek.

Shrek - Christian Lovera

Shrek

Shrek is about a grumpy ogre, voiced by Mike Myers, called Shrek who enjoys his “bachelor” life style by living alone in a swamp, however, his life gets turned upside down. His swamp gets taken over by fairy tale creatures such as Pinocchio because Lord Farquad, the king around these parts and main antagonist has evicted them all from their land. Shrek tries to take back his land with the unwanted help from Donkey, voiced by Eddie Murphy. His quest leads him to the castle of Lord Farquad, and he proposes a deal to him. If Shrek wants his swamp back he has to rescue a damsel in distress that he wants to marry in order to be a real king, because a king is no king without a queen. The perfect reason to get married, am I right?

Shrek

Shrek

So, we have Shrek and his untrusty sidekick on a quest to save the damsel in distress from a tower surrounded by lava and guarded by a dragon. The unlikely duo manages to rescue the princess by seducing the dragon, who happened to be quite taken by Donkey’s game, but the princess is quite confused about why the Farquad sent someone to rescue her instead of going there himself, but strangely seems to go on with it and decides to marry Farquad when they meet him, she also seems to be quite confortable around the ogre, which many normal people fear.

Shrek - Christian Lovera

Shrek

On their way to Farquad is where the love blossoms. The princess, Fiona, who appeared like your stereotipical princess turns out to be a really interesting and atipical character. Fiona is an independent woman, who knows how to fight and stand her ground, and she and Shrek develop a bond of sorts, but Fiona has a secret. Every night she becomes an ogre because she is cursed and Shrek mistakes her behaviour while human has rejection for his ogre form and pushes her back and lets her marry Farquad.

Princess Fiona - Christian Lovera

Princess Fiona

Fiona needs to marry Farquad in order o have true love kiss and then take the form of that true love, which would be human because Farquad is human. Shrek is back into his swamp, his at last, but can’t seem to enjoy his old life because his old life is not enough anymore, this is when Donkey tells him Fiona’s secret and this leads Shrek to barge into Fiona’s wedding and confess his love to her. Farquad tries to stop this but get’s eaten by Donkey’s girlfriend, the dragon.

Just when night falls and Fiona is turned into an ogre she fears Shrek will reject her, but she finds her even more beautiful and share true love’s kiss, which breaks the curse, but she remains an ogre because she took the form of her true love Shrek, and both lived happily accepting their differences.

Movies like this break away from the tipical love stories and breathe new life in the genre.
