Five Indie Flicks you May Have Missed

When most people think about Indie Films, they think about a black and white, foreign language film about a talking goat or something obscure like that. But the truth is that many great films you’ve seen are from independent cinema, you just didn’t pay much attention because it wasn’t summer blockbuster. Here’s a list of well received Indie Films you should watch.

 #5 Still Alice

Bet you didn’t see this one coming. This independent gem got all kinds of Oscar buzz, even getting a win for Julianne Moore for best actress. And it’s not hard to see why. The film tells the story of how a linguistics professor gets diagnosed, and then copes with Alzheimer’s disease. Its important to mention that there is a star-studded cast, including Alec Baldwin and Kristen Stewart.

#4 Slow West

This movie stars X-men star Michael Fassbender, among other stars, and centers around what can only be described as a modern western. With all the elements you would expect, a man traveling cross country to find the woman he loves, and an outlaw that helps him along the way, you really can’t go wrong with this one.

#3 Cake

Cake is a more thoughtful film about a depressed Jennifer Aniston who abuses drugs, and takes you on an emotional journey into her life. The role got the Friends actress a Golden Globe nomination for her performance, as it represents a deep departure from her regular comedy roles.

#2 Knight of Cups

This film is about a man who struggles to find his way amidst fame and fortune and everything in between, as a screenwriter in Los Angeles tries to make sense of his life. Although he is succesful at work, his personal life feels like it has no meaning. You probably know the protagonist, Mr. Batman himself Christian Bale plays Rick, a man who is quite the opposite of what were used to seeing from him. Plus, you might have heard of some of the supporting actors in the movie, like Oscar winner Natalie Portman, Cate Blanchett and Antonio Banderas

#1 Maggie

The final independent movie in our list has something in common with one of the biggest blockbusters of the summer, as it stars ex governor, former bodybuilder and Terminator Genisys star, Arnold Schwarzenegger. But apart from Arnie in the starring role, there’s plenty to like, firstly, this is a zombie movie, but not the kind you would expect. This is a rich story about a father and his child, a child who by the way is slowly becoming a cannibalistic zombie. So it’s more of a drama that exposes the acting skills of America’s most loved action heroes.

The are five fantastic stories that have come out in the past year and you should really give them a chance, because these are some great experiences that you won’t find anywhere else. And some of your favorite Hollywood actors have made a genuine effort to do something different and unique.

Earth’s Mightiest Heroes Are Nearly Upon Us

Earth’s mightiest warriors are back in less than a week and we are all freaking out about it. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been of the biggest movie franchises in recent years, or decades, I think there has never been anything quite like it. A series of Marvel super heroe movies being released almost yearly and to critical acclaim is almost, if not, genius. Seems hard to believe that it all began with the Iron Man movie, starring Robert Downey Jr, a movie that did better than anyone thought possible and made the MCU a reality. The MCU began in 2008, with Iron Man, and here we are, 2015, tons of Marvel movies after and the MCU shows no sings of stopping.

The Avengers: Age of Ultron

Just when the team thought their adventures ended when they ended the evil plan of Thor’s brother, Loki, they are summoned once again to stop the aritificial intelligence Ultron. Ultron, played by James Spader, renowned actor currently the leading man in the NBC show The Blacklist, does an amazing job in bringing life into the character. James Spader may only provide his voice and facial expressions to the newest threat to the world, but he does an amazing job to it, no one else could deliver Ultron’s lines with such mallicious intent without coming out as cheap or tacky,

Avengers: Age of Ultron will be the movie that ends the second chapter in the MCU and will probably have some dire consequences that most likely fuel the fire for the upcoming movie Captain America: Civil War, which we all know is one of the greatest story lines in Marvel History.

Chapter three in the MCU will begin with the movie Ant Man, starring Paul Rudd, which also looks amazing and a strong start to a new franchise on a super heroe.

The Avengers

Let’s not forget that the MCU does not only consist of movies. While waiting for Avengers: Age of Ultron, you can ease your Marvel cravings by watching the newest Netflix Marvel show based on everyone’s favourite blind lawyer vigilante, Daredevil.

The number of super heroes are just getting bigger and bigger, and with the newest additions from Avengers 2, Quicksilver, The Scarlett With and the mysterious Vision, we can expect the upcoming Captain America to be just as awesome as Avengers 2, or even greater.

Once thing is for sure, on May the first, when Avengers 2 hits theathers you will fine no one on the streets during the premiere because everyone will be cramped inside a movie theather giggling like a school girl while watching their favourite heroes kicking some evil butts.

Can Shrek Survive His Wife’s Family?

When talking about animated movies severeal pieces of art come to mind. We have movies like Finding Nemo, which was very well received by the audience and has a sequel in works, and we have the most recent animated blockbuster Frozen, which did very well beyond anyone’s expectations. All of these animated movies are truly great, no questioning that, but there is one franchise that stand above alkl the other ones, Shrek. Shrek 2 keeps all the elements from the first one and brought a whole lot more in order to make a movie that truly does the first one justice and stands as one of the best sequels in the film industry. Let’s check it out.

Shrek then tries to find a way to make it up to Fiona by looking for a potion for them to be human, so they will be able to live a normal life with her parents. The potion, however, was all part of a trap setup by the Fairy Godmother in order to make human Fiona fall in love with her son,Charming, so that he would be king someday. Learning of this Shrek rushes back to Fiona, who is surprised to be human again.

Capetonians Are Preparing for an Italian Film Festival (Video)

Arthouse films will be the main character at the Italian Film Festival that will be held in Cape Town. According to cinema manager Ludi Krause, he chose twelve Italian arthouse films in order to people enjoy emotions and deep topics instead of special effects and noise. He states that if commercial films increase the number of their productions, arthouse films should do the same.

The Italian films were chosen because they had a great audience in the past and many of them were nominated and won important awards such as the Oscars. Also, these films take you to another place, they make you reflect upon reality, upon life and you can relate your life with the lives of the characters. That is the magic of arthouse cinema, that are common stories that you can relate with.

The movies included in this festival are:

  • La Città Delle Donne (City of Women), this movie is about chauvinism and feminism;
  • The Dreamers is a movie set in Paris and tells the story of young people and their struggles;
  • Le Bal is an Oscar-nominated movie of 1983;
  • Cinema Paradiso is an Oscar-winner movie that tells the story of a child and how he fell in love with the cinema.

Chinese Arthouse Film is Having a Huge Success

Despite the fact that arthouse films are not made for commercial purposes, and that many of them are not watched by a considerable amount of people,  Chinese movie Black Coal, Thin Ice has demonstrated the contrary about this thought.

The movie has had a large amount of people watching it though this was not the intention of the film.

After being awarded with the Golden Bear for best film at the 2014 Berlin International Film Festival, the production has gained 98.4 million yuan (US$16 million) and this figure is increasing. The movie displayed for the first time on March 21th and since that day, it has had a non-stop success.

According to Diao Yinan, the director of the movie, arthouse films are not very famous in China; arthouse films usually do not have a big audience. Diao Yinan states that due to the award, this movie became famous. If the movie had not won this prize, this success would have not been possible.

Some people that work in the movie industry are trying to make a change regarding the separation that exists between:

  • arthouse films,
  • independent films,
  • non-commercial films,
  • and commercial movies.

Some of these people state that directors can combine elements from both types of movies and create something completely different and attractive.
