Five Indie Flicks you May Have Missed

When most people think about Indie Films, they think about a black and white, foreign language film about a talking goat or something obscure like that. But the truth is that many great films you’ve seen are from independent cinema, you just didn’t pay much attention because it wasn’t summer blockbuster. Here’s a list of well received Indie Films you should watch.

 #5 Still Alice


Bet you didn’t see this one coming. This independent gem got all kinds of Oscar buzz, even getting a win for Julianne Moore for best actress. And it’s not hard to see why. The film tells the story of how a linguistics professor gets diagnosed, and then copes with Alzheimer’s disease. Its important to mention that there is a star-studded cast, including Alec Baldwin and Kristen Stewart.

#4 Slow West

This movie stars X-men star Michael Fassbender, among other stars, and centers around what can only be described as a modern western. With all the elements you would expect, a man traveling cross country to find the woman he loves, and an outlaw that helps him along the way, you really can’t go wrong with this one.

#3 Cake


Cake is a more thoughtful film about a depressed Jennifer Aniston who abuses drugs, and takes you on an emotional journey into her life. The role got the Friends actress a Golden Globe nomination for her performance, as it represents a deep departure from her regular comedy roles.

#2 Knight of Cups

This film is about a man who struggles to find his way amidst fame and fortune and everything in between, as a screenwriter in Los Angeles tries to make sense of his life. Although he is succesful at work, his personal life feels like it has no meaning. You probably know the protagonist, Mr. Batman himself Christian Bale plays Rick, a man who is quite the opposite of what were used to seeing from him. Plus, you might have heard of some of the supporting actors in the movie, like Oscar winner Natalie Portman, Cate Blanchett and Antonio Banderas

#1 Maggie


The final independent movie in our list has something in common with one of the biggest blockbusters of the summer, as it stars ex governor, former bodybuilder and Terminator Genisys star, Arnold Schwarzenegger. But apart from Arnie in the starring role, there’s plenty to like, firstly, this is a zombie movie, but not the kind you would expect. This is a rich story about a father and his child, a child who by the way is slowly becoming a cannibalistic zombie. So it’s more of a drama that exposes the acting skills of America’s most loved action heroes.

The are five fantastic stories that have come out in the past year and you should really give them a chance, because these are some great experiences that you won’t find anywhere else. And some of your favorite Hollywood actors have made a genuine effort to do something different and unique.

 

Why You Should Care about Independent Cinema

When you think about movies, one of the first things that comes to mind might Terminator Genisys or Jurassic World. But if you want to challenge your mind while having fun, there’s nothing like sitting down and watching a good indie flick, if for no other reason than to get a good, original story.

A clear view into a director’s vision

You see, independent cinema is more character driven and the director has almost total control over his vision, and their names are very recognizable. For example, you might have heard of Woody Allen, who has made incredible films with his most recent muse, Scarlet Johansson, who has done practically everything from Ghost World to Marvel’s Avengers movies.

And that is what really defines Indie films, most directors have a signature shot, style o trademark that can be seen in almost all of their work. For example, director Wes Anderson, creator of The Grand Budapest Hotel always uses symmetry in his films. And almost every director inserts their own signature to their movies.

It can define an entire genre

Alfred Hitchcock, basically, defined the modern horror genre, with masterpieces like Psycho, The Birds and Dial M for Murder. As a matter of fact, he inspired a new generation of thought creating suspense that has inspired a whole generation of filmmakers.

This years It Follows was a surprise horror hit because it shows little to no violence, blood or nudity. Also, it had a surprisingly low budget and still manages to give you goosebumps, why? Good story telling for sure, and directed in a way very reminiscent of Hitchcock’s work.

You get really interesting stories

Ryan Gosling is best known for being a Hollywood heartthrob, but did you know he directed Lost River? That’s right, directed, and pretty well, he gives a truly unique story about life in Detroit from the point of view of one of the last families living in an abandoned neighborhood, while also giving all sorts of shocking and artistic images throughout the film.

Many famous actors try independent films at least a couple of times. In fact, some directors as well as A list stars like Jennifer Aniston started their careers in indie films.

And finally, the best reason to start paying attention to independent cinema is that you get to enjoy an original story, that means no remakes or sequels that rehash the same thing over and over again. Plus, supporting your favorite actors and directors will get them to make even more awesome movies.
